We concluded the last day at the IEEE German Education Conference (GECon) 2024 Today’s keynote address, delivered by Dr. Leah Sharp from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), was forward-thinking with the topic “Rapidly Emerging AI Technologies: Transforming Educators’ Roles,” Dr. Sharp explored how AI tools are revolutionizing the educational landscape. She highlighted the dual importance of integrating traditional teaching methods with AI, particularly generative chatbots, while being mindful of ethical considerations. Dr. Sharp emphasized that while AI can significantly enhance personalized learning experiences, the irreplaceable value of human interaction remains crucial. Her insights into preparing educators and students for a future deeply intertwined with AI, ensuring they are both technically savvy and ethically aware, were particularly thought-provoking.

Following the keynote, we had a technical session focused on the “Applications of AI.” This session featured a range of insightful presentations:

– Seegerer shared experiences from a MOOC on artificial intelligence designed for a broad audience.
– Dieckmann discussed a hybrid course system on AI, offering insights into instructors’ didactic support.
– Berrezueta-Guzman et al. presented on enhancing interactive learning in computer science education through a Discord-based chatbot.
– Mckern explored the use of AI-based interactive digital assistants in virtual reality educational contexts.

These presentations underscored the diverse and innovative ways AI is applied to enhance education, providing valuable takeaways for all attendees.

We also congratulate the best paper award “‘Komputer & Creativit¨at’: Teaching at the Intersection of Engineering, AI, and Theater” by Stefan Röhrl, Sabrina Schwarzmeier, David Fresacher, Luca Sacchetto, Alexandra Strasser and Klaus Diepold. In this paper the author researched a novel approach to teaching communication skills and fostering creativity in engineering
students while including improvisational theater sessions.

We are excited about the enthusiasm and engagement shown by all participants today and look forward to another day of insightful sessions and discussions tomorrow. We hope to meet you next time at GECon 2025 in Hamburg.
