IEEE Germany Section Spotlight: IEEE Student Branch Ilmenau

The IEEE Student Branch at Technische Universität Ilmenau has grown into one of the most active student communities within IEEE in Germany. Founded in late 2007 and officially established in January 2008, the branch connects students early in their academic journey with a global professional network and provides a platform for both personal and technical development.

The branch embodies IEEE’s core values: advancing technology for humanity, fostering knowledge sharing and innovation, promoting collaboration and global networking, and empowering students to grow professionally. Student Branch Ilmenau serves as a bridge between academia, industry, and research, offering students opportunities to develop both technical skills and leadership capabilities.

The branch organizes a wide range of activities, including technical workshops and training sessions, hackathons and hands-on learning events, industry visits, networking with international IEEE communities, knowledge exchange programs, and social events that strengthen teamwork and community spirit.

Current Leadership Team:

Chair: M. Sc. Nadja Isabelle Belz

Vice Chair: Dipl.-Ing. Carsten Thomas Gatermann

Secretary: B. Sc. Hannes Grüßung

Treasurer: M. Sc. Filipe Riccardo Gadotti

Webmaster: B. Sc. Felix Wöllhaf

With around 30 active members, the branch not only contributes locally but also maintains strong connections with other student branches and partners across Germany and beyond.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions, active engagement, and strong leadership, the IEEE Student Branch Ilmenau has been awarded the IEEE Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award 2025 by IEEE Region 8. This award highlights the branch’s dedication to fostering innovation, professional growth, and meaningful impact within the global IEEE community.

Congratulations to the entire team at Ilmenau for setting an inspiring example for student branches across the region.

M. IEEE geehrt.

The 2024 awarded education project “FEM for FSI with Open Source Software” , organized by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Roland Wüchner (TU München) and Dr.-Ing. Ann-Kathrin Goldbach (TU München), in collaboration with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ursula Kowalsky (TU Braunschweig), developed collaborative methodologies for master programs. The event included online lectures, hands-on coding exercises, and a workshop where students worked in interdisciplinary teams to solve research challenges. A total of 46 online participants (including 11 from TU Braunschweig) and 19 in-person participants (1 Bachelor, 7 Master students from TU München, and 11 Master students from TU Braunschweig) engaged in projects spanning computational mechanics, aerospace, and civil engineering. The event successfully fostered international research collaboration, despite initial challenges in the online phase, and concluded with final presentations of student projects. The organizers acknowledged IEEE for its generous support of this educational initiative.

The IEEE Germany Section funds these educational initiatives in a bi-annual call for Cross-Institutional Projects in Education.
